If Idalia continues to veer towards the Big Bend region of Florida, (re)insurers are generally expecting the storm to represent a retention-level event for domestic insurers in the Sunshine State, although ahead of landfall there is a high degree of uncertainty around the outcome.

A landfall strike within this sparsely populated region could drive a single-digit billion loss, potentially either side of the $5bn mark, sources said.
