Japanese renewals: Reinsurers lower expectations of wind repricing

Reinsurance underwriters and brokers anticipate a Japanese renewal largely unaffected by Covid-19 as negotiations continue to focus on payback for 2018 and 2019 typhoon losses.

This year’s 1 April renewal presents a contrast to that of 2020, in which reinsurers achieved 35%-55% rate increases on wind programmes amid last-minute turbulence as panic over the impact of the pandemic struck negotiations.
